Every June 12, Filipinos around the world pause to celebrate Araw ng Kalayaan — Philippine Independence Day. More than just a holiday, it’s a moment to reflect on the courage of our ancestors, the value of freedom, and the enduring pride of being Filipino—wherever in the world we may be.
A Look Back at History
On June 12, 1898, General Emilio Aguinaldo proclaimed the independence of the Philippines from over 300 years of Spanish colonial rule. This declaration, made in Kawit, Cavite, marked the birth of the Philippine Republic—the first in Asia.
Though full independence from foreign influence would take many more years, that historic day became a symbol of the Filipino people’s strength, unity, and aspiration for self-determination.
A Celebration Across Borders
For Filipino-Canadians in Surrey and across British Columbia, celebrating Independence Day takes on new meaning. It’s not just about remembering the past—it’s about embracing our identity, passing on our stories, and keeping our culture alive in a multicultural country like Canada.
Even without grand parades or festivals, the spirit of June 12 lives on in:
- The meals we share with our families,
- The values we teach our children,
- The language, songs, and stories we preserve,
- And the quiet pride we carry every day.
What It Means to Us at SFCBC
At the Surrey Filipino Canadian Society of British Columbia, we see Independence Day as a reminder of our mission: to support Filipino families, celebrate our shared heritage, and build a stronger community.
Freedom is not just about history, it’s about empowerment. We honor our roots by:
- Promoting Filipino culture and education,
- Uplifting fellow kababayans through community initiatives,
- And being visible, proud contributors to Canadian society.
A Simple Way to Celebrate
You don’t need to attend a big event to show your pride. This June, consider:
- Sharing a Filipino dish with your neighbors or coworkers
- Teaching your children about Philippine history or a folk song
- Supporting a local Filipino-owned business
- Posting a Philippine flag on social media with #ArawNgKalayaan
- Saying a prayer of thanks for the freedom we enjoy today
Mabuhay ang Kalayaan!
This Philippine Independence Day, we celebrate not just a moment in history—but the strength of a people. Let’s continue to carry the values of freedom, community, and resilience wherever we are.
From all of us at SFCBC, Maligayang Araw ng Kalayaan!
Let’s stand proud, stay united, and keep the Filipino spirit shining in British Columbia and beyond.
